Dominical vacation accommodation for real estate investment

January 29, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

If rental income is an important consideration for you in purchasing Real Estate in Dominical or anywhere else in Costa Rica, then do your homework and ask independent vacation rental specialists for an assessment. It is pointless asking real estate sales people who will probably say you will receive  this or that based on pure guess-work. Ask those who actually  operate a vacation rental business.

The common talk among owners of poorly located or overpriced rentals goes  like ‘my property has not been rented for months…’

Is business picking up? Sure, but with more vacation rental homes and condos coming into the rental market monthly, and visitors still not up to past levels, owners of new vacation rentals will have a harder time than they imagine!

Dominical prawns with Thai dressing

January 23, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

After years of buying fresh fish from one place or another the fish stall opposite the turn off to Punta Dominical seems to have the most consistent and fresh product. The stuff moves a bit and that helps. The Tuna is good as well.

Prawns cost from Colones 5k to 8K a kilo, seems a good buy, the less expensive ones are sweeter and for salads and ceviche seem better value. The mid size at 8K a kilo batch are great with a Thai dressing as a dip, find a recipe or try this one:

1-2 tablespoons fish sauce (nam Pla or use a chinese version readily available in Costa Rica)
2 tablespoons water
1 to 2 tablespoons of lime juice to taste
2 tsp palm sugar
4 sliced chiles (ok 2 is ok so adjust to desired heat level)
1 teaspoon grated ginger
2 cloves garlic minced
1 teaspoon minced shalots
Handful of cilantro coarsely chopped

Place ingredients in blender and liquefy but don’t over do it or the leaves will turn gray, you want a bright green sauce. Enjoy it with a few beers and tacos and an avocado dip.

Pelicans, Guapil beach, basura

January 23, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

Want to see over 200 pelicans  in 4 sets of about 50 gliding over the clear pacific ocean waters at the same time? This is the time of year to witness such a spectacle. Especially stunning if seen from a deserted beach like Guapil.

Playa Guapil is probably the mostly deserted beach in Dominial, but with the highway more or less completed to Manuel Antonio it will be found out by more and more visitors no doubt. Clean sand and a great beach for talking a long walk from one estuary to the other near the local wildlife refuge.

Keep it clear of BASURA, guys. Thanks to 3 gringos who spent a whole Sunday morning cleaning up after the Xmas and new year filth left by I am sorry to say the locals, all is well at Guapil.

A big thankyou to the volunteers, great job by all.

Earthquake tremor felt in Dominical

January 23, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

Mid morning yesterday our whole house shook, the maid thought it was another Haiti and rushed out of the house. What it must be like in Haiti is unimaginable.  A deep rumble and the whole house moved.  Lasted for about 5 seconds, about a 6.1 apparently. The epicentre was about 3 km south of Jaco, 48 km deep in the earth’s core. This must have been the 4th time in 4 years,  so they are regular, and a volcano north-east of San Jose went off a few days back. Must be related to what is happening in the region right now.

The hottest day in Dominical

January 22, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

The thermostat in my Mitsubishi Montero registered 101 degree celcius this afternoon, at 3.30pm. I scrambled over to Pacific Breeze Villa to turn on the AC on my way to meet and greet my guests  checking in at 4pm at our downtown office. Thank goodness they didn’t have to walk into a furnace. They loved the villa at first sight, ‘Pretty’ is what they kept saying. ‘Pretty’ is in fact the common reaction every time I ushered guests into this villa.  Looks like she’s going to have a busy high season.  If you are thinking of booking her, here’ the availability calendar!

Dominical Costa Rica beaches and safety tips

January 18, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

Those on Costa Rica vacations often ask us about beach safety so here it goes:

Ask the locals for information – surfing and beach conditions – they know best!
Ask them about riptides and undertows before you get into the water.
If you get caught in a riptide, don’t try to fight it.  Swim parallel to the shore, toward the breaking rip wave.
Never swim alone.
Do not swim at night or after drinking alcohol.
If you don’t know how to swim well, stay in very shallow water.
Never let children play alone in the water.

There are people in the know on all the main Dominical beaches, so ask and be safe.

    Hotel Room or Vacation Rental?

January 17, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

How to compare different types of accommodation available in Dominical? Well if you want a living room, kitchen, an ocean view balcony, and sometimes a private pool, for 4 people it’s a no brainer as to which offers better value between staying in a hotel or renting a vacation villa. For a couple it might be a little more expensive, but you get a full kitchen which saves heaps on eating out, and dining on your private ocean view patio is rather enjoyable or even romantic.  And add privacy. Vacation rental is certainly a handy option in Dominical where it is not exactly a gourmet restaurant paradise. Take a look at CostaRicaBedfinder.com, who has the largest inventory of Dominical rentals, and over 600 around the country if you wish to organize a multi-destination vacation. They can arrange car rental, stocking your fridge with wines and other goodies and booking accommodation at your next destination. Takes the hassle away from doing it all yourself and having to communicate with multiple homeowners or their reps, and the service is free.

    Dominical to San Jose

January 16, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

We used to travel over the mountains through San Isidro and into Cartago, but with the new coastal highway near completion we got into Escazu in under 4 hours last week. Stress free on the car and our dogs, who had a pit stop at Playa Hermosa. Trouble is coming back that way with heavy traffic up to Atenas, but once through that its is fine, best road in Costa Rica between Manual Antonio and Dominical. There is a German restauant at the main square of Atenas, good for lunch. Better this way than to San Isidro, the mountain road is bumpy and in the wet a real pain.

Dominical vacation rentals, beach and ocean view

January 16, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

The new community of Canto Del Mar in Dominical has wonderful villas for rent that are just above the Playa.  All have ocean views, and most are only a 8 to 12 minute walk to the beach. The villas are rather modern, most have cable TV and some have private plunge pools. Maid service is usually included if you are renting from the onsite company run by Costa Rica Bedfinder, who also has an office downtown in the Plaza Pacifica. The ‘Bedfinders’ live at one of the units themselves and are on hand to look after everything. It’s a great location choice for a Costa Rica vacation.

    Costa Rica vacation news

January 16, 2010 by Costa Rica Bedfinder

Update on the road from Dominical to Manuel Antonio is that it is 99% completed!. Against all  the odds and what feels like 20 years of waiting we have 1km to go. Work is going on at the gas station, and it now is only 35 minutes to down town Quepos, on the best road in the country. Good news for those who are visiting this part of Costa Rica for vacation.  When the highway is completed from Jaco to San José, it’s less than 3 hours to San José. wow
